31A Parliament Street is a six-storey freestanding commercial/retail building that will extend the fabric of the Distillery District to the southwestern edge of the site. The structure, which received a 2007 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence, updates the rackhouse building typology – the warehouse in which casks of aging spirits were stored in multi-storey post-and-beam racks. A system of concrete beams stands for the original wood, and free-floating, self-contained production units stand for the original oak casks, creating a flexible, innovative building suitable for a broad range of creative, new media uses.
